WORLD POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017

MU had three lifters competing in the World Powerlifting Championships in far away Minsk, Belarus.

Adam Jones came in 19th in a big 83kg class, with a good 247.5kg squat and a so near miss on 295kg deadlift. Adam was over-trained this time but 700kg beckons in his future.

Up in the 120+kg class Tony Reinmuth starred with an Australian Record Squat of 355kg, 362.5kg (800lb) looked a certainty but Tony went through the hole. Conservative on the Bench after a shoulder injury, Tony sailed through 212.5kg. In the Deadlift Tony built his Total to 887.5kg, an Australian Record, only for Tyron Senituli to pip him at the post with an 890kg, in an epic battle.

But the top Club performer was Yani Zhao, coming in 4th in the 84kg class with an Australian Record 507.5kg Total. Yani’s squat was so-so at 195kg, but her Bench was more solid at 105kg. The Deadlift was the showdown time for the Total medal and Yani came through with a seemingly impossible 207.5kg. That left Zubko of Belarus needing 215kg to take the bronze and a very controversial success left Yani far from disgraced in 4th place.
